Chapter 9

Sirens and emergency vehicles crowded the scene. Amar stood close but not close enough to the devastation in front of him. What had been a popular and thriving entertainment resort now lay buried under tons of rubble.

“She’s not dead,” Garik said in a voice so cold Amar’s cat shivered in reflex.

“They’re still bringing out survivors,” Sulen added, gaze frenetically scanning the crowd of bleeding, limping people being led out.

His skin had taken on a waxy washed out appearance. Between Garik’s and Sulen’s grief, Amar wanted to be strong and positive to support them but it was hard. They could feel the connection with their bond mates. Amar only held on to the hope Scarlett lived.

He’d raked his hands through his hair so many times, he probably looked as unsettled as he felt. “We should go in.”

Garik’s head snapped in his direction, turning from the smoking remnants of the resort for the first time in the last hour. “What?”

Inhaling deeply and letting out the breath, Amar repeated himself. “We should go in and find them. Waiting is only going to drive us crazy. You and Sulen can sense Saedra and Amelie. We find them, we find Scarlett.”

They would never separate. Scarlett had called and said they were in the halls—.

In an instant, the recollection came back to him. “Scarlett called me from her comm.”

“Call her!” Garik and Sulen ordered at the same time.

Amar whipped out his device and hit the contact for Scarlett while he held his breath. It buzzed once, twice. They waited for the sound of the call to connect only to have it stop mid buzz.

“What happened?” Garik snarled.

Amar tried again. And again. His fingers tightened around the small device. The call wouldn’t go through. “It’s got to be interference from the collapse.”

If he thought it was anything more, if it meant Scarlett wasn’t alive to answer, Amar wasn’t sure how he’d react. Inside, his cat wailed again. Mate.

Disappointment creased Garik’s cheeks and Amar bit off a frustrated growl. Anger wouldn’t help right now. They needed to be decisive. “Reach out to contacts. I want to know any and every bit of information possible about the status here.”

Amar immediately started going through his own list of associates. Unfortunately, he didn’t know any other Gerelins on Covard. He didn’t have much use for engineers so had no one to reach out to regarding the event here and possibilities for survival.

To his left, Garik muttered under his breath, placed a call then hung up, and repeated the cycle. On his right, Sulen wandered off with his head bowed in an intense conversation. Sulen definitely had a wide and varied network of resources.

Amar wasn’t assazi like them. He didn’t take lone missions for the Guild. He tended to work as back up or in conjunction with other assassins. As a result, his network consisted of contacts from the organization and not many outside of that realm.

Think. He had to think of how to help Scarlett. She couldn’t die. They’d just acknowledged liking each other.
